Gentle Knife - Gentle Knife

Gentle Knife - Gentle Knife (05/2015)

When Eivind contacted me, kindly asking for a review, I gave him the same usual answer: I will write a review only if I like the album. I also pointed out that, in this case, it will be a review written in french. He answered me: "We would love a review in french !". I really appreciated this high regard, this respect for "other", when every day this crazy world is showing us the opposite.
So Eivind, this is my special dedication for you and Gentle Knife: my first, and maybe last, review in (my poor) english !!!

Here is a band, Gentle Knife, which could increase its visibility, at least in the (not so small) world of progressive rock. And not only because it is untypical. It is gutsy, too. Counting 10 members (!), this Norwegian band based in Oslo delivers here its first album, a near-one hour concept-album, about an ill-fated wanderer lost in the depths of a haunted forest. Okay, okay, I can see you, some guys here around, with crooked smile: "What's thaaaaaat, a concept-album about fairies and eeeeeeelves, yeeees, I bet there is some mellotron and flutes, isn't iiiiit ?".
Hummmm... yes, you're right, there is mellotron and flutes. But wait, wait, please don't go !.. at least not immediately. Let me explain, first !
Ok, this is clear: if you can't stand this "good old" original progressive from the early 70s, even brought up to date, you can go your way. Those who can only listen prog metal will not find here the heavy atmosphere and rough guitars riffs attached to this music. So, if you're in this case, you are kindly allowed to stop reading this review at that point.
At the opposite, if you spent a lot of time listening to King Crimson, Van der Graaf or Genesis, you will find with Gentle Knife strong reminiscences of these famous pioneers. Once again, be clear: reminiscence and inspiration doesn't mean copy-paste nor plagiarism ! Of course there are those who assimilate and are inspired by... and redo the same. And there are some others, filled rather than inspired, and able to offer their own interpretation, their own musical alchemy. Obviously, it's easy to find on which side is located Gentle Knife.
Recovered these jazzy colors, thanks to the sax of Thomas Eriksen. Recovered the beautiful languor of (first part of) Starless, on Beneath the Warning Moon, or the wild energy of VdG on some parts of Our Quiet Footsteps. Add to that the voice of Melina, remembering us Kate Bush, which is not a so bad. It's even more a very good point.
After the first 2 songs, each of them reaching the 10 minutes, specific to the progressive item (changes of rythms, mix of vocals and instrumental parts), 2 titles more "traditional" in their structures (including the beautiful Remnants of Pride) make the junction with the second part of the album, more "mind-blowing" and aerial, and where the vocals are leaving the scene (except on The Gentle Knife, sung and dynamic). The last title, Coda-Impetus, is highly-oriented to jazz-rock, and should satisfy fans of this genre (especially with a ravishing guitar/sax final).
The bet was risky, but the bet is successful. Yes, it's possible today to make something new being inspired by old stuff, without being boring, laborious, dusty or out of date. At the opposite, this music is creative, alive, quiet and serene. Above all, it's well done, elaborated and controled.
This review will not end without highlighting the performance of aligning at the same time "Gentle Knife" as Band-Name / Album Title / Song Title !
